Age
Aging of alcohol is the process of storing alcoholic beverages in barrels or other containers for a period of time to allow the flavors to develop and mature. This process can take anywhere from a few months to several years, depending on the type of alcohol and the desired flavor profile, in the case of tequila there is.
1. Blanco (Silver): Unaged and bottled immediately after distillation.
2. Joven (Gold): Blended with colorings, flavorings, and other spirits.
3. Reposado: Aged in oak barrels for two months to one year.
4. Añejo: Aged in oak barrels for one to three years.
5. Extra Añejo: Aged in oak barrels for more than three years.
Mixto and 100% agave
Mixto tequila is made from a blend of at least 51% agave and other sugars, such as corn syrup or cane sugar. 100% agave tequila is made from 100% blue agave and is considered to be of higher quality than mixto tequila. 100% agave tequila is also smoother and has a more complex flavor than mixto tequila.
